April Curriculum UPdate
Students worked incredibly hard on goal setting the past couple weeks with report cards and in classroom. We learned the new method of making sure your goals are “SMART” S=Specific, M=Measurable, A=Attainable, R=Relevant, T=Time-Bound (when will you achieve it). I’m very excited to see thoughtful goal setting and students learning a process which will help them continue to succeed throughout their lives! For the past month, we also tried out a new class meeting called a “stand-up meeting” where we talk about what went well during the week, what didn’t go so well, and what 2 goals we should set for our classroom the following week. Last week was the best behavior for the entire year because they didn’t lose any muffin points! If you are interested in learning more about what we are doing in class, be sure to ask your child. I know they will be excited to fill you in!
Writing: Students will complete their second all-day writing assignment on Wednesday to prepare for the expository MSP. Please send in sugar-free gum if you are able. We will review strategies and reminders of how to successfully setup narrative and expository writing pieces for the rest of the month.
Reading: We are almost halfway through our class novel, Riding Freedom, to practice all of the essential reading skills we learned so far this year using a fictional text. To prepare for the MSP, we will focus on understanding character analysis and point of view to improve the results we had on the Winter RAI test. April will be the final month for reading entries and free writes. Students are welcome to continue to do them for extra credit after April.
Nonfiction Book Report: due Monday, April 29th. Book report forms are available online and in the classroom. The activity is creating a quiz to test the knowledge of any student who “thinks” they know a lot of information about the topic they chose. Project Due May 13th.
Spelling: We are returning to our regular spelling lists AFTER Spring Break with list #19. As a reminder, everyone in the blue group is now in the yellow group for the final trimester.
Math: I’M EXTREMELY PROUD TO ANNOUNCE… our students averaged 95% on the test for Topic 16: Customary and Metric units. They worked diligently to learn the conversions with a variety of ways to express their learning styles. We will cover Topic 17: Data and Graphs, Topic 18: Equations (during 1Ž2 Hour Power), and Topic 19: Transformations, Congruence, and Symmetry this month. Be sure to check out the “Math Help!” tab on our website for helpful videos and games to practice. enVision Website Link: www.pearsonsuccessnet.com
1/2 Hour Power: Students scoring below 80% on Topic 14 just finished retake tests and improved greatly on understanding of area/perimeter! Students are working on IXL, creating iPad math videos, enrichment, and mind twisters while I meet with small intervention groups. We will also use this time to practice MSP questions.
Optional April Review Packet due Friday, April 26th
Enrichment Packets (optional): Due Mondays for those who desire an extra push in Math.
Mind Twisters (optional): Due every other Monday to enhance critical thinking skills.
Extended Homework (optional): Create a Board Game is due Wednesday, May 1st
Science: We are continuing our unit on Energy for the next couple weeks.
Please check our website for detailed weekly plans, announcements, and other information at http://mrsroubicek.weebly.com Look for new blog posts, pictures, and videos!

Check out the video below for ideas that I implement into our classroom...
Valentine's party Thursday, February 14th 2:10-3:15
Dear Families,
Every year, students love to exchange Valentine’s cards. To make this year special, I have a few guidelines to suggest. The cards can be purchased or homemade. Each child must write a card for every student in the class. I’ve provided a class list below to make sure no one is missed and will also send home a hard copy. For a new twist this year, each student must also add one positive comment for each person. It is always nice to hear how someone else appreciates you. In doing so, students go beyond the emotionless cards in an effort to encourage the positive interactions that create a strong classroom community. What a wonderful way to continue our Character Counts! I appreciate your support in helping your child write meaningful Valentine's cards this year. Please let me know if you have any questions.
